Unreliable sources

The Global Peace And Justice network has just issued a message to the media carping on about the quality of local coverage given to The Tragedy. Which tragedy? Not the tragedy of brutal China and helpless Tibet. Not any of the various tragedies involving various despotic regimes in North Africa. Not the tragedy Russia has brought to Chechnya.

Nope, just the one tragedy — the only tragedy that ever matters to this country’s radical left — which is the tragedy of democratic Israel defending itself against  sustained attacks by a dedicated terrorist organisation.

The press release takes issue with the various media descriptions of the combatants in the apparently concluded Israel-Gaza conflict (Palestinians as “militants, Islamists, insurgents, extremists or even terrorists” but Israeli troops simply as soldiers), the preponderance of (as the writers see it) Israeli spokespeople over their Palestinian counterparts, and, finally, a general public left in the dark with the blanks “filled in with bigotry and prejudice” courtesy of talkback radio.

To be sure, there’s probably a lot that still needs to be critically said about the recent conflict — a Palestinian-penned piece here in the New York Times probably isn’t a bad place to start — and we certainly agree that it might have helped to see footage of a uniformed Hamas soldier or two during the conflict.

Still, the producers of this hastily cobbled-together media release don’t make the cut. Their release can’t even be refuted point by point because it offers no actual case studies or real arguments.

Since they raise the issue, though, now could be as good a time as ever to review the uncritical media coverage enjoyed over recent weeks by the so-called Global Peace And Justice network.

First, the organisation, whose true membership almost certainly numbers no more than a dozen, received prominent billing, including an above-the-fold report in the country’s largest paper, for its plans to assemble a vast picket line of shoe-waving demonstrators against the presence of Israeli player Shahar Peer at an Auckland tennis tournament. In the event, just 12 or 13 protesters showed.

Next, the organisation claimed that “a dedicated unit within the Israeli military” had somehow managed to sabotage the group’s website on account of its opposition to the Gaza operation.

Exactly why, or how, the Israelis should opt to hit an obscure antipodean site while leaving tends of thousands of other critical outfits unmolested was never explained. Nevertheless, the make-believe “story” received generous play throughout most of the New Zealand media. (Here and here, for starters.)

Also in media evidence has been a steady stream of “calls” by the group to the New Zealand government, the Israelis, even “world leaders,” to fall into line with the group’s agenda.

Notably absent throughout any of this has been any serious analysis of what that underlying agenda really is. And how much of a serious constituency, really, does “Global Peace And Justice” command? What about the passing similarities between aspects of its anti-Jewish critique of Middle Eastern affairs and some of the views put forward by one of the world's better-known arch-racists?

Might another of the “tragedies” here be the media’s lack of curiosity in any or all of the above?

There has seldom been any balance in the NZ media reporting of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But there has always been a tendency for the NZ media to defer to the Israeli version of the events. Especially in Granny Herald. Historically we have applauded and admired the Israelis for their dedication, passion and tenacity in their struggle to create a homeland. Why is it so hard then to understand why the Palestinians might also want their own homeland? You can do all the analysis and debate you like but just look at the number of casualties from each side of the dispute every time there is another conflict. The number of dead and wounded Palestinians always outnumber the number of Israelis. Where should our sympathy lie?

Reminds me of the Nicky Hagar organised lobby group Just Defence. It's wailing got it similar media billing, only for its membership to be revealed as Hagar and two others.
The media's critical analysis of these mad men is as poor as ever.

Can you back it up, this oft repeated claim of pro-israeli bias in the local media? i think if you were to searcxh the herald archives for comment pieces on the conflict, you'd come up pretty empty handed when it comes to rah rah zionist comment.

go on, prove me wrong...

War is like this -- people take sides.
It usually comes back to one person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter.
When you watch sport -- do you ever see infringments from the side you support?
You will see a lot of them from the side you don't support.

Israel is regarded as a modern western society with democratic rules and with humanitarian principles, similar to any other western countries.
What happen over years is constant provocation, killing innocent people, destroying infrastructure and stealing Palestinians land, breaking international laws- this is just not acceptable. The recent conflict is just another example:

I say that again: Your opinion isn't a fair reporting on facts, but propaganda.

Do you remember when the US Army showed the world (Iraq) how accurate they can pin point a target = 2 m2.
Why not use it on Hamas rocket shooters ?
Why destroy families, infrastructure, land etc. why ?

In the last 3 weeks I wrote some comments & links about issues between Israel and the Palestinians, which you obviously not agree.
Thank you for not deleting my comments- great ! A good sign of fair NZ democratic standards.

As mentioned above (more facts) a 22 day war was not needed to stop Hamas from firing rockets. The destruction and loss- the war crimes of Israel (Zionists) only create more Hamas members, which eventually leads to even more wars. Palestinian's life without hope a concentration camp now- what is next?
My mother (Jew) told me stories from Nazi Germany, which reminded me what happened in early January 09 in Gaza.
We can not accept such atrocities from any nation, but especially from a so called Western country with high humanitarian standards-
we can not accept Zionists propaganda either.

Can you please honestly tell us what this loss of lives as achieved in your opinion. Actions speak louder than words, and the IDF have stated what they wanted to achieve, and instead of subjective analysis of right and wrong, what do you think the result is?
