Chief Employment Court judge Graeme Colgan has forced the department back to the negotiating table after answering an unprecedented question.

And perhaps just to make a point, Department of Justice staff at courts, tribunals and other ministry worksites throughout New Zealand went on strike for 23-hours until 10am today.

Ministry of Justice staff to start industrial action

Ministry of Justice staff will begin industrial action tomorrow after pay negotiations between the ministry and the Public Service Association union failed.

More than 1700 staff, many of whom work in courts and tribunals, will start work-to-rule action tomorrow which will escalate to strike action if a settlement is not reached, the PSA said.

The staff's two collective agreements expired on June 30 but negotiations, including mediation, have not resolved the pay dispute.
