UPDATE: Westpac's internet banking was back online Saturday morning.
Westpac's online banking service has been offline for much of the day, and the bank still has no idea when it will come back online.
A message on the bank's website at around 1.45pm and still on the site at 4pm, read: "We apologise for the inconvenience but the Westpac Online Banking service is temporarily unavailable. We are currently working to fix this issue as soon as possible."
One customer, John-Daniel Trask, told NBR he had had problems accessing the site since 9.30am. "It's been on and off since this morning," Mr Trask said.
Another, Tessa Slade, said she had been unable to access Westpac online banking since around 1pm.
At 4.45pm, Westpac spokesman Chris Mirams told NBR the bank's internet banking system had been completely offline for around two hours. Earlier, there had been intermittment issues.
Both web banking and mobile banking services were offline.
The bank had no estimated time for getting its system back online.
Mr Mirams said a "hardware disk issue" had caused the problems.
Asked if this meant a storage or network storage-related issue had taken Wespac's online banking offline, Mr Mirams said he did not have further information.
Mr Mirams said eftpos, credit card and ATM services were functioning as usual.

Comments and questions
I have had no luck all day and trying to run a business which this makes it very hard. I expect Westpac to give all account holders no monthly fees for at least 3 months to make up for their negligence. Can we go for damages through the banking ombudsman for this stuff up ?
i was down for a couple of hours on tuesday as well
Hmmmm ... I see NAB in Aus has fallen over today as well.
I haven't been able to access it since I first tried this morning at 8:30am! Love it how they have linked to their legal pages to show us they have us screwed. Monday morning I'm heading down to the National Bank, this is the final straw.
Unacceptable! Maybe there's been a run on the bank! Or a hacking! There should be some valid excuss posted by the bank, does any other "Bank" have this problem?
It never seems to get into the news.
Have recently changed to Westpac..wondering why. Find their on line payment system very cumbersome.
Could they not have put a message up arranged for some kind of message advising customers of the failure to save evryone wasting time trying to connect all day.

This is just part of a series of access issues for at least the last 60 days. Just another example of sloppy IT staff holding the business to ransom because they don't like working outside of business hours.
FREE DOTCOM NOW!!
Next thing the FBI will be back in town blaming Mr Dotcom.
Or maybe it was the FBI trying to do some banking online and as usual completely stuffed the mission up - another case of total overkill after they got frustrated trying to pay their wages and decided to punish the bank
Who would know???
Free Dotcom Now! LMAO!
Bloody frustrating!! Especially not knowing when it will be up and running again
Bring back Dotcom - he will fix it nek minut
This was a practice run for the coming collapse of Westpac NZ in 2012, with the inevitable deposit savings 'haircut' of up to 80% of your savings at Westpac ... courtesy of the Reserve Banks new OBR policy!
Get all your savings out of Westpac before the haircut which will be sometime between April 2012 and December 2012... You have been warned.
I wouldn't be so hasty I did the opposite after 30 + years at National and this is a minor inconvenience. We all need to be prepared & have abackup plan, it is no different to our own computers crashing. Heh they are all prone to this & no matter what safeguards we have it can still happen.

You can always use their IVR until it gets going. Not that I can remember my Login details.
Glad I'm not that IT manager !
In response to Kieran John: Are you ignorant or mischevious? The RBNZ's proposed OBR policy would apply to all banks... see http://www.rbnz.govt.nz/finstab/banking/4430900.html
If you don't like it, lobby the RBNZ, or bury your gold in the backyard.
Yeah havn been able to access my account all day either! Hav to say ive been with wpc for 20 yrs an never had a problem accessing my account or probs with staff. I think this cud happen to any bank or any business for that matter including service providers etc. look at wat happened with telecom not so long ago! IT and technology is a curse as well as a godsend but we've grown to trust and rely on them for so much in our daily dealings and business, can we really do without it? you're damned if u do, and damned if u dont!! So i will prob stay with them!
Im changing banks

OK! OK! So, we don't live in a perfect world!! Get a life you guys and stop bitching!! Go and do something else in the meantime!! Are you perfect?? Betcha you 'fall over' sometimes too!!
Seriously! You guys need to get a life if this is all you have to worry about. Branches, phone banking and EFTPOS all working.
We don't know how lucky we are with westpac's internet banking. Instant payments, transfers, pay anyone, txt and email warnings, download all transactions as far back as 1996 and we want to moan about it bern down for a day or day?
I went to a funeral today. He was 25 years young, not been sick, out of the blue he died in his sleep. To see his parents and sibilings so upset, very very sad. Computers can be fixed, payments can be caught up. Fees reversed. A young man's life can't........
I just happen to have received a phishing e-mail from "Westpac Security" today. Coincidence??
Wonder how many banks really educate/warn their customers about any such risks....

I don't think you will
my sons acc has had $200 taken from it and we cant find out why, called last night they didnt no, try to find out today, cant get on line. HE IS DEF CHANGING BANKS WESTPAC HAS WAY TO MANY PROB WITH YOUR MONEY
To all the ones who think this is acceptable you need to rethink, at least once a fort night my son has prob with his acc and yes it is always the banks prob. He works from 6am till 5pm when does he get time to go to a bank. Happy for the people who dont work and can go to the bank during working hours, he had no money for petrol and the bank cant tell him what they have done with his money, hence me out of bed at 5am to go to the petrol station, just a tad pissed off
so agree just spent the best part of 1/2 trying to login
Comment from the Westpac would be lovely advising their customer on whats going on........
Still not working. we are in Saigon and its very frustrating
I am in London and have not been able to access Westpac online banking for two days that I know of.
