Vodafone leaps up TrueNet/Tuanz chart

After languishing at the tail end of the download results in September, Vodafone has leapt up the rankings dramatically only a month later in the latest TrueNet-Tuanz landline broadband chart.

Orcon has also moved up the rankings, taking second place from Telecom.

Although TelstraClear's HFC (hybrid fibre-coax) cable service remains in the lead for the third month in a row, TelstraClear's DSL service (available throughout the country) has entered the fray for the first time with a performance placing it last of the five major ISPs. Previously, TrueNet has not had enough testng volunteers to cover TelstraClear's DSL (that is, broadband over copper) offering.

TrueNet's John Butt said, "The greatest improvement was from Vodafone, moving from last to a position that would have seen them third in September, but for the competitive response from Orcon & Slingshot"

Tuanz chief executive Paul Brislen said the results are fascinating, given the way ISPs position themselves in the market. "We're used to seeing ISPs fight it out purely on price terms, with customers forced to assume that all ISPs are alike. Instead, we're seeing clear differentiation in terms of the service being offered."

TrueNet is an indepedent testing company that recruits volunteers to measure their internet service provider's speed. Tuanz (the Telecommunications Users Association) lobbies on behalf of its corporate membership, and telecommunications consumers as a whole.
