Retail chain in receivership

Staff have been sent home following the closure of Criterion Group’s ‘Kitchen House’ stores nationwide.

CGKH Ltd, which traded as Kitchen House, said in a statement that the company has been placed in receivership as of yesterday, 22 February 2012.

Shareholders had announced to Kitchen House staff it was impossible for the company to continue it’s trading, affecting both customers and 35 staff members.

Grant Graham, receiver of KordaMentha said in a statement today that the company’s records currently show a substantial amount of debt in the range of $2.4 million.

“Given that staff had been sent home by the directors on Monday it is unlikely there will be any further trading.”

Mr Graham also confirms that several customers who have laid deposits down on kitchen orders will be given full priority in order to resolve the current situation.

“We understand there are a number of parties who have paid deposits on kitchens and we are working through that with the assistance of staff.”

CGHK had required the Kitchen House business in February of 2009.

Comments and questions

This is just the tip of the iceberg, wait theirs more to come.

Another company, its staff & customers dreams crushed by inept leadership from directors who appear to be self serving with little to no integrity (Debts of 2 million+ don't just appear overnight! - they saw it coming, told KH employees all was rosy & kept on taking customers money). I saw this coming & 2 weeks ago I advised the Wellington manager to find a new job ASAP, as Kitchen House (CGKH Limited) would be out of business within months - He RESIGNED last week, what a surprise. Unhappy customers can contact Bev Smaill (referred by staff as one of the owners) at: bsmaill@xtra.co.nz or 021

I had confirmed my Kitchen - Removed old power and water so it was ready for the arrival of the new Kitchen. I heard a rumour and went to the Retail shop manager, whom call the head office in front of me, and had a full guarantee from Mr Smaill 9/2/12 that the deposit paid was in a trust account and refundable and that the company was definately trading and was not in trouble. I was totally mislead by the Director. How can the public ever have confidence in any Supplier when the Company Director lies, and deliberately steals the customers money. There should be criminal charges and prision time applied.(In Bail Jail) suffer as we your victums-customers are having to do.

I was a Kitchen House employee and am really gutted with the Smaills as after the Criterion Group Ltd went into receivership, they sent out an email to all Kitchen House employees saying that “We have a totally separate ownership and different plant so for Kitchen House it’s business as usual” and “customer deposits are in a solicitors trust account for the benefit of the customers”.

If this was true how can any of these affected customers be losing their money as is been reported in the media????

I know for a fact that NONE of the Kitchen House staff would have taken customer’s money if they thought that there was a chance they would lose it!

Will the staff get a pay out from this?

It depends how much $ is in the kitty which is what the Receivers are trying to figure out, but with $2.4m debts I would doubt it.
