Lines company Vector appears to be taking advantage of Telecom’s recent woes to gather public support for its bid to install “fibre to the door” of 450,000 Aucklanders.
According to company tweets, more than 1000 members of the public have submitted comments on the www.fibretothedoor.co.nz website since it launched.
Along with social media, Vector is running a television advertisement (see below).
Though the $1.5 billion investment in local companies is a government decision (through its Crown Fibre Holdings entity), public campaigning can only work in Vector’s favour, especially if the company is successful.

We post all comments - both Yes and No on the fibre to the door website. We have been clear in saying that we will only invest in Fibre to the Door if it makes commercial sense for our shareholders. Go to www.fibretothedoor.co.nz if you wish to have your say.
I want to ensure that Vector is acheiving an appropriate rate of return on its capital investments.
With uncertainty about the price businesses and residents are willing to pay for fast broadband and hence uncertainty for a product I fear for my shareholder returns.
More than a trickle of water would be great but many households in New Zealand dont pay for water on a per user basis - and those that do dont contribute enough to deliver enough returns to water providers or enough to ensure adequate investment in maintaining/upgrading those networks. Vector should know how bad the state of Auckland water is - and yet uses it as an analogy for data. Great choice.
According to Reuters NTT has taken its aspirational target of 30m homes for FTTH to 20m. Since launching in 2001 NTT has c13m homes connected - estimated at 26% uptake.
And according to Reuters...... its not profitable for NTT despite teledensity and scale significantly greater than NZ.
God knows what NTT and teledensity are but I did like the bit in the ad with the afro guy in she shower. Nice one Vector Fibre
Free money from the government - there's no better business case than that! Good politicking Vector!
for a product I can't buy.
